Walla Walla winery wins top award at Tri-Cities Wine Fest

A Walla Walla winery took home top honors at the 30th anniversary Tri-Cities Wine Festival on Saturday night at the Red Lion in Pasco, Wash.

The Russell Creek 2005 Winemaker Select Syrah was chosen as best of show in the annual competition, which this year drew a record 328 wines.

The judges for this year's competition were Wilfred Wong of Beverages & More, a large retailer based in the San Francisco area; Jim Harbertson, a professor at WSU's research station in Prosser; Dan Berger, an international wine judge from Santa Rosa, Calif.; Keith Brown, vice president of Vincor, a wine company based in Ontario, Canada; and Eric Degerman, managing editor of Wine Press Northwest, a Tri-City-based wine magazine. Richard Larsen, a plant pathologist for WSU, was the silent judge.

The competition was held over three days this week, and the results were revealed at Saturday night's public tasting.

Tagaris Winery in Richland also showed especially well, with two wines earning unanimous double gold medals for winemaker Frank Roth. Columbia Crest in Paterson, Hightower Cellars on Red Mountain, Saint Laurent near Wenatchee and Airfield Estates in Prosser won "best of category" awards.

medal winners?

Thanks for posting the medal winners - always interesting to compare our notes with the judges. One thing I'm wondering - what percentage of the wine entered won a medal?

Percentage of medal winners

In this particular competition, it was about 62%. In my experience, anywhere from 55 to 65 percent is normal, so this is within that range. The fact that Dan Berger and Wilfred Wong were judges says a lot. These are two of the most experienced and sought-after wine judges in California circles. They do not give out medals willy-nilly.

% of medal winners

I must confess, 62% seems high, although I do appreciate your comment about the quality of two judges involved. Anyway, as additional data points, the IWC 2007 was about 34% (http://www.drinksmediawire.com/upload/pdfs/cdp/PR-IWC07MedalResults-Eng.pdf), and toughest I know is Sydney International Wine Competition (15%). At the other end of the spectrum, the 2008 San Francisco International was about 66%! I seem to remember reading somewhere that 30%-ish was normal, but maybe it varies more than I thought. Interesting to ponder ...

Medal winners

I have seen big competitions hand out medals for up to 85% of wines. That's quite a lot. Frankly, if a competition is awarding fewer than 50%, then it needs to look at the judges it's using. Competitions are a way to reward wineries doing a good job. If the judges are too stingy, then that's a problem.

I was on a panel a few years ago at Riverside that gave no more than two or three golds out of more than 250 wines. Typically, a competition will see between 5% and 8% gold medals, so it was outrageous how stingy our panel was, but it was me and three winemakers, and the winemakers kept imagining all kinds of faults that weren't really there.

Airfield Unoaked Chardonnay

We visit this winery whenever we are over in the area and I always bring home a bottle of their unoaked chardonnay. It is an EXCELLENT wine. I never knew why I wasnt a huge chardonnay fan, and now I know it is a heavy oak taste that I dont like. This wine is great and Im pleased to find out they won. We also are fans of
