Honoring a legend

On Saturday evening, the Washington wine industry honored Stan Clarke by inducting him into the Legends of Washington Wine Hall of Fame in Prosser.

Clarke, who died unexpectedly last fall, was a grape grower, winemaker, educator and wine writer in his more than 30 years in the business.

His wife, Carol, gave a warm and often amusing speech about Stan's life and his passion for wine and teaching.

The event took place at the Prosser Wine & Food Park near Hogue Cellars. A special "Legends Blend" of Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted by Co Dinn, Hogue's director of winemaking. And the food was provided by Anthony's in Richland and The Marc in Walla Walla. More than 300 people attended the gala event, which is a fundraiser for The Walter Clore Center.

A True Loss

I can't say that I knew Stan on a very personal level but I did know him professionally. I worked with him on wine auctions on several occasions. His knowledge of the Washington wine industry was impeccable and he was able to articulate it beautifully. He was passionate and it showed. I'm so glad he and his family received such an honor. It was more than well deserved.
