Merlot and music

I like to unwind at the end of my day with a glass of merlot and listen to some light music, such as jazz. Something about great wine and great music relaxes me. The other day I popped in one of my favorite artists, David Sanborn. If you aren’t familiar with him, he is a great saxophonist/jazz musician. He’s actually coming out with a new album called “Here and Gone” August 12th which is really great news! Anyway, his music really relaxes me, and paired with a great glass of wine makes for a perfect evening. Try it out – check his Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/davidsanbornband for some of his best music and pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine. You won’t regret it ;)

Basketball Jones!

Oh this is just great guys. Thanks alot for placing a Basketball Jones earworm in my mind. It will be humming through my mind now all day "Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-oo... I was de baddest dribbler in the whole neighborhood..."

By the way, I can't quite see a Zweigelt being paired with Basketball Jones, but I can see a nice Sauvignon Blanc - - especially one with very "grassy" tones.
Cheers!

Wine reviews and jazz

Leslie:

I totally agree with you. In fact, my companions while writing wine reviews are the Watercolors channel on XM satellite radio or the Watercolors-based smooth jazz playlist on my XM Inno. No commercial interruptions. Great music. Very little singing.

My favorite artists include Richard Elliot, Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Bob James, Pat Metheny, Everette Harp and Paul Taylor. In fact, I have tickets to see Boney James at Chateau Ste. Michelle later this summer. Corvallis-native Chris Botti will be at the chateau, too, much to the delight of the ladies.

Wine and Jazz.......

Now HERE is a topic that is dear to my heart!

Wine and Jazz..... two classic pairings. I am more into bebop, although I do listen to some smooth jazz, and in fact play in a smooth jazz group. We played Arbor Crest Winery last summer in their summer concert series.

Some of my favorite pairings..... Russian River Valley pinot noir and Thelonious Monk. Two mysterious beings with lots of subtleties and layers, a little cola, a little Asian spice.... Late 60's Miles Davis (Think "Bitches Brew") with a killer old vine zinfandel. High octane juice with high boppin'/hard rockin' Miles, with the spice and balls to make you think, but not think too hard..... John Coltrane and a classic Walla Walla cabernet sauvignon/blend. Very earthy, yet almost surreal sax, backed with some of the best session players of their day that add complexity and play off of each other in ways that surpass the sum of their parts...... And finally (and I know this isn't jazz.....), classic Led Zeppelin with a dark, brooding, yet surprisingly melodious syrah. Nothing better than listening to 'The Lemon Song', 'Ramble On', and 'What Is And What Should Never Be' with a bucket of JLC Spofford Station syrah! And yes, I did say "bucket"... it is the spirit of John Bonham living on!

Peace,
Tim

Kenneth Gorelick Zinfandel

Tim, when it comes to Kenny G, what White Zin do you recommend? Thanks.

Kenny G

Actually, when it comes to Kenny G, I recommend Arbor Mist (any flavor) with an Everclear chaser to make it a bit more palatable (Kenny G, not the Arbor Mist...) or, better yet, 3 Valiums and a good smack on the forehead with a brick.... either way, it's lights out!

Cheers!
Tim

Good use for corks

Here's where I'd want a wine with a cork closure - so I could use it to plug my ears.

cork closure.....

If they made a much larger cork closure, we could shove it up his soprano sax!

Larry Norman

Peace out,

LN

Are you an LN fan? Man, we gotta talk!

Only visiting this planet.....

Hey brother Andy!

I may be an "Outlaw", but I am a huge Larry Norman fan! "Why should the devil have all the good music"? Good question.... maybe the answer will be on the "Six O'Clock News", after the story about "Peacepollutionrevolution" and the recent "UFO" sighting where there were "two men walking up a hill, one disappears, and one's left standing still..." Man, "I wish we'd all been ready".

RIP, Larry Norman. We miss you, and "I hope I'll See You In Heaven."

Peace!

Basketball Jones

What would you pair with Cheech & Chong's '70s classic Basketball Jones?

It would have to be eclectic, even off the wall, with a bombastic midpalate.

I'm going with Blauer Zweigelt.

Cheech & Chong

I think that anything that I would pair with a Cheech & Chong movie would have to have a very green, herbal element to it...... fairly toasty, with a finish that lasted for a long, long time.......

D'oh!!!

T

Vegetal

I think the terms your looking for are herbaceous or vegetal characteristics. :-)

David

Herbal

Maybe even "weedy."

Herbal.....

Ya think that "skunky" smell could be a case of volatile acidity gone bezerk?

All of these "grassy", "weedy", and "herbal" comments seem to indicate perhaps a nice Columbian, Hawaian, or perhaps B.C., sauvignon blanc... then again, some of those wines are pretty seedy...

Cheers!
Tim

Grassy

Definitely B.C., bud.

I plead the 5th

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(pretty freakin' funny.....)
