End of an era: The Shoalwater's last supper

With entirely too little fanfare, the amazing Shoalwater Restaurant in little Seaview, Wash., served its final meal last weekend.

After 28 years in the historic Shelburne Inn on Washington's Long Beach Peninsula, owners Tony and Ann Kischner have closed the Shoalwater to focus on their new operation, the Bridgewater Bistro in nearby Astoria, Ore.

The Shoalwater has been a legendary Northwest restaurant. Its wine list was second only to The Herbfarm's. Its cuisine was regionally inspired. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was superb.

I've eaten a lot of meals in a lot of restaurants in the Northwest. The Shoalwater was No. 1 on my list. Easily.

I have no doubt I'll also enjoy the Bridgewater Bistro. I haven't been there yet but hope to make it there this spring.

Meanwhile, there's an empty spot in my soul with the passing of the great Shoalwater.

Bridgewater Bistro

Very, very sad that The Shoalwater is no more. What a fantastic place. Good news is that The Bridgewater Bistro, which is literally under the bridge between Astoria and WA, is terrific.

Debbie and I enjoyed an afternoon tryst in early February at the Bridgewater. Terrific appetizers, especially the spicy calamari. We lingered far longer than time allowed, but had a great time.

Our congratulations to Tony and Ann. Wish they were in WA rather than OR.
