Tilman Hainle, Fred Couples highlight B.C. resort

North of Kelowna, B.C., a resort community called The Rise features a Fred Couples golf course and an on-site winery operated by none other than Tilman Hainle.

Couples, a Seattle native who played for O'Dea High School back in the '70s, went on to fame on the PGA Tour and whose career includes a win at the 1992 Masters. He helped with the design of The Rise's golf course.

Tilman Hainle grew up in the fledgling Okanagan Valley wine industry, with his father, Walter, who made Canada's first commercial ice wine in 1973 at Hainle Vineyards in Peachland.

A few years ago, Tilman sold his eponymous winery and moved on, now popping up at The Rise. He expects to produce 35,000 cases from the estate vineyards at The Rise.
