Washington's top vineyards: No. 1. Champoux Vineyards

Appellation: Horse Heaven Hills

Paul Champoux produces Cabernet Sauvignon treasured by winemakers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

This vineyard's first plantings were in 1972, when it was known as Mercer Ranch Vineyards. Champoux, who helped plant Columbia Crest's Horse Heaven Vineyard about 20 miles to the east, began working at the vineyard in the late '80s and later purchased it with four winery partners: Powers, Quilceda Creek, Woodward Canyon and Andrew Will.

Champoux Vineyards annually receives just over 3,000 heat units per year.
