Hamina leaves Maysara to start own label

Winemaker Todd Hamina has left Maysara Winery/Momtazi Vineyards in Oregon's McMinnville appellation to start his own winery, Biggio Hamina Cellars.

Hamina's talent has been evident in the bottle (his 2005 Pinot Gris was one of our top picks in last year's judging of Oregon's favorite white wine). Lesser known has been his involvement on Momtazi's vineyard and nursery operations.

He has vineyard sources lined up to begin harvesting next month in the McMinnville, Yamhill-Carlton, Dundee Hills and Chehalem Mountain AVAs. Hamina plans to make 1,400 cases of Syrah, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Melon. The Pinot Blanc will be released this winter.

The other half of the winery's name comes from Hamina's wife's side of the family - and it's no relation to the professional baseball player.

Maysara opening

I know of a talented neighbor of the Momtazi Vineyard who is quite familiar with Moe's fruit.

Perhaps "Kid" Coleman will apply for the opening at Maysara. However, I don't think fourth-graders get out of school until after 3 p.m. I wouldn't bet against Ryan talking his way into getting a hall pass and arranging for a note from his sixth-period teacher.

Just imagine Ryan negotiating his salary with Moe. That would be hilarious!
