A rare and delicious treat

Last night at the L.A. County Fair Wines of the World Competition, the judges got together for their traditional dinner/party on the fairgrounds campus.

Making dinner was the staff of the Hitching Post, the restaurant made even more famous in the film Sideways.

One of the treats of the evening is Dr. Bob's famous ice cream. Dr. Bob Small runs this competition and began making handcrafted ice cream several years ago. The stuff is truly great.

Last night, it got even greater. Dr. Bob got together with Harry McWatters of Sumac Ridge in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. They came up with a Gewurztraminer Ice Wine dessert. There were four styles: ice cream with and without chocolate chips and sorbet with and without chocolate chips. All four were amazing, with the aromas and flavors of the ice wine coming through. My favorite was the sorbet, which revealed delicate aromas and flavors of rosewater.

Don't plan on being able to find this being commercially made. I would estimate it would cost close to $100 per pint to produce.
