Summer wine picnics

A few of us headed to Walla Walla for the day during Spring Release Weekend. It was my job to pack lunch, which include cold cuts, bread, dolmas, cheeses, dips, olives, etc.

But where to picnic?

After visiting DaMa Wines downtown and stopping at Leonetti, we headed south of town to Northstar because we were told it had a nice, picnic-friendly patio. Sure enough, the area faced southeast, so we enjoyed a gorgeous view of rolling wheat fields and vineyards below the Blue Mountains.

What a perfect respite during a fun day of wine touring.

Officially, summer is three weeks away, but the weather is warming, schools are letting out, and many of us are thinking about regional wine touring. Some wineries' settings and facilities lend themselves to picnicking, so I will try to share those I've enjoyed throughout the years as we head into summer wine-touring season.

Meanwhile, share some of your favorites in the comments.

Tinhorn Creek in the Okanagan

Tinhorn Creek winery has a beautiful lawn area, patio, mini-ampitheatre, and a gorgeous view to take advantage of while touring the Okanagan Valley. You can buy wines by the glass, and they have a small cooler with meats and cheeses. Its one of my favorite stops because its conveniently located between Oliver and Osoyoos.

Tinhorn

Good call! Tinhorn has a great spot south of Oliver. From the demonstration vineyard, you get a great view across the valley to the Black Sage Bench. And the Tinhorn folks are really terrific.
