How many times have you said to yourself "I wish I had......".

Some of those times have been "Your wine pricing is unreasonable. We're going to go somewhere else for dinner." Perhaps one in 200 of us have the intestinal fortitude to do so, and of those one in 10 don't think about it until later. But there will be no return visit to the restaurant.

Everyone loses, and the restaurant closes for unknown reasons.

Has anyone out there made an issue of pricing with an otherwise desirable restaurant? What was the result?

A good wine list with reasonable prices is a sign of an excellent restaurant and you should expect no less when asked to spend your hard earned money on a night out. That said,
you are better off buying a wine by the bottle rather than by the glass at any better restaurant.Here's some reasons why 1)The wine's on the wine list are higher quality than the wines poured by the glass.2)You get more wine for your money. Most people assume there is 4 glasses in a bottle of wine. A restaurant get's 6 out of a bottle. (Yes there are exceptions like the hole in the wall Greek place that pours it's wine into a pint glass for $3 but that's not a hangover I need.)3)If you are using good judgement in choosing a dining establishment you can assume that the person who puts the wine list together loves most of the wines on that list. You can also assume that that person has many years of experience with wine and wants nothing more than for you to enjoy her/his choices. If you are not familiar with the wines on the list seek a recommendation.

I agree with you that the Restaurant industry would do well to keep the prices a little lower. My husband and I are huge foodies and we love fine dining. We check out the wine lists/prices/corkage fee before we decide where we are going. It has kept us from dining at many restaurants and returning to some of our fav's over and over-- Brasa being one of personal favorites!

Seattle Times tackles the question

Good timing on your question, as it's one that Paul Gregutt at the Seattle Times tackled this week.

Personally, I'm less likely to buy wine by the bottle at a restaurant whose prices are much more than double the retail. I guess some restaurateurs figure we don't know what a wine costs, so they jack it up. If I see a Barnard Griffin Cab (Tulip label) for much more than $35 (double retail), then I'll probably stick with a glass of the house red for $8 or $9.

It wouldn't hurt to do two things:

-- Mention to the server or owner that the prices seem kind of high and that's why you didn't buy a bottle.

-- Offer suggestions on a favorite Northwest wine that is a good bargain (such as a Barnard Griffin, Columbia Crest, Erath, etc.) that would fit on their list.

This way, you're offering a solution, too, which should be better appreciated.
