Pretty funny.... but I know what you mean. I rarely buy Chateau St Michelle wines, particularly their more entry level wines. I do like a few of their mid-range wines - the Ethos reisling, and I think it was the Indian Wells chardonnay last year that we liked fairly well. But the cheaper grocery store wines? I really don't groove on them much. I usually turn to the Columbia Crest Two Vines or Grand Estates lines for daily drinkers like that. They are well made (not saying that CSM wines aren't - just a different style) and I always know what I am getting. Chateau St Michelle is a great winery, but they do have a different style than I care for. Same goes for Hogue, although they have really improved over the last 2 vintages from what I have read. I should buy a few bottles of their 2007 vintage and check them out again. I have heard some good things about them lately. Their Genesis line is usually decent, but the 2005 vintage had this strange flavor in them I likened to green wood. I don't know what it was, but it didn't make my palate a happy camper! So... it was back to CC Grand Estates, Kiona, Waterbrook, Barnard Griffin, and some of my favorite less expensive foreign wines... The Spanish label Tapena 2007 Garnacha (grenache), for example, really rocks in the under $10 range.

Funny how sensitive we are about writing anything that could be construed as "negative" on here, isn't it? We all want to support Washington wines so much that we hesitate to give our "true" opinions on certain wines or wineries. Aren't reader forums a place for us to share ideas and opinions? On that thought... I still think Sutter Home wines are better for stripping the paint off my deck than for human consumption...

It seems to me that there enough wine "experts" out there, and enough affordable, decent wines out there, that someone would come up with a consulting service for these chains. Really... I could come up with 10 or 12 affordable wines, for a very small wine list, that actually taste decent and that they could sell for $5 to $7 a glass that are nationally and readily available and that would give people like us at least something to consider before ordering that Kokanee beer! Heck - I don't even like beer, so I am hosed there, too...

Actually, that might be kind of fun to do here. What wines that fit that criteria does everyone like that they would be willing to drink in your local Applebees or national chain joint? I will let you all start the list.
