I had Washington Hills NV Rainier Red ($8 - cab franc and cabernet with a splash of other varietals thrown in) a while back and thought it was a pretty enjoyable wine for the money. A very straight forward easy drinker without a lot of complexity but a good QPR.

Thanks for the thoughts as always. I agree that part of the problem is that most of the good syrahs are quite pricey which is what got me thinking about what the good value offerings are.

I have seen the Boomtown on the shelf a million times but somehow have never picked it up. I will give it a try. Same with Terra Blanca which I haven't had in years. Interesting to me that their syrah and merlot always seem to be on sale and, at least for the merlot, always seems to be the 2003 vintage. Makes me think they must be quite backed up on their wines which seems odd as they are good values.

Amen on the Amavi Les Collines. Reason alone to join their wine club. And here here to the WW funk, and I'm not just talking about Richard!

Let's see... Question 1 - why doesn't Washington syrah sell particularly well? Well, the really good stuff is fairly expensive - over $30, and I have many in the $30 to $50 range in the cellar. We can all name lots of great ones, but excellent bottles from Fielding Hills, Doyenne (DeLille), Coeur d'Alene Cellars, Spring Valley (Nina Lee), and many, many others are all fairly spendy - in the $40 range and higher. And forget about Cayuse... I have been on the waiting list for years! I think that people are more willing to spend that kind of money on a cabernet sauvignon, but syrah simply doesn't have that kind of status, or allure - yet. And that is a shame! Washington syrahs are, by and large, fabulous. I think one more reason might be that Washington syrahs tend to fall somewhere between true Rhone' style and the more fruit bombish Aussie juice that features penguins and boomerangs on the labels and that sell for $8 a gallon at Safeway. There aren't a lot of decent cheap Washington syrahs in that price range, especially that satisfy the sweet tooth of the aforementioned Aussie critter label buyers. Again, Washington really makes a lot of very high quality, interesting syrahs, and I buy quite a few of them since I love the big fruit, the spice, and often, that Walla Walla funk!

As to question number 2, I am sure lots of people can pipe in on this one. For a more inexpensive syrah, the Boomtown syrah rocks. I think it is about $15, but I am not sure. Barnard Griffin does a nice one as well. Terra Blanca has a nice Red Mountain syrah we buy occasionally at Yokes, and it is usually on sale for about $13, if I recall. Columbia Crest Grand Estates isn't bad, and isn't too ripe. Arbor Crest makes an excellent syrah that we get for about $13 a Costco. I am sure it is more than that at some stores. In that same range, a syrah/cab blend called "Syrca" from Rulo Winery really kicks some butt for $18 at the winery.

Under $30? Coeur d'Alene Cellars basic syrah is really nice for that price. These may be Yoke's special deals, but I was buying the Woodward Canyon (2004) syrah for $23 awhile back. I really like Robert Karl's syrahs, which are in the high $20's. Barrister makes some bruisers in the $24-$29 range, and their Morrison Lane syrah is very, very good. JLC makes some excellent syrahs in this price range, although I think my favorite of theirs, Spofford Station, is about $32. Amavi does a great job in this price range, and if you can find it, their Les Collines vineyard designate absolutely slams! It is around $30. I would have to check the cellar to see what else I have that would be in that price range, but this is a start! It is easy to find some excellent Washington syrahs in this price range. Time for everyone to pipe up!

If anyone does have some less expensive syrahs that drink like something twice the price, let me know! I am sure all of us are looking for deals.
